Hull Bondholders Case Study on Beverley Motor Works

Richard recently had the opportunity to speak in front of 180 key business people from the Hull and East Riding, explaining how the local FEO had supported the business and advised them at crucial stages, they were assigned a mentor Iain Bland from Paragon Data Services to assist with support and guidance and consequently became a customer of the business, allowing the team to look after not only Iains BMW M3 and X5 but also the fleet of vehicles from PDS.

Beverley Motor Works Ltd is a business driven by two owners that are dedicated to the region.

Richard Hayes and Alan Lewis invested their entire savings in order to open their independent service centre, a business that unquestionably benefits from over 30 years of combined industry expertise and plays to their strengths.

The company has also benefited from the input of For Entrepreneurs Only, a proactive network of business people committed to encouraging enterprise in Hull and the East Riding.

Beverley Motor Works offers specialist, high-quality routine and condition-based servicing, MOTs and repairs to BMWs and Minis at very competitive prices. It is the only service centre of its kind in the area.

The business aims to bridge the gap between the impersonal service provided by main dealerships and the somewhat intimidating experience offered by small garages – which is good news for owners of these two famous marques.

Founded in 2010 following extensive market research that identified an opportunity to establish this unique option for motorists, Richard and Alan opted for premises that would allow for future business growth. Their 6,500 sq ft facility at the Grovehill Industrial Estate on Annie Reed Road in Beverley is equipped with two ramps but has the capacity for a further eight.

Richard Hayes said: “The location is obviously very good as we are able to serve customers from Hull and also attract those from right across the East Riding, York and further afield, such as Leeds and Lincoln. The cost of business premises here is attractive and we are of the view that we will be based here for a long time. We knew that there were opportunities here and we are constantly getting enquiries from new customers.”

The location is also beneficial to customers for another reason; they are able to savour what the area has to offer while work is carried out on their vehicle.

For Richard and Alan, the advice and support they have obtained from business-driven support networks has been invaluable.

Richard said: “We were confident that we had a strong business model that would add value, but have been really overwhelmed by the help and interest we have received from other East Yorkshire businesses who had a strong desire to help us make it happen.”

Feeling that it was important to nurture their own people and create the right business culture, the duo employed an apprentice shortly after launching the company. Growth from scratch has been impressive, with almost 1,000 customers on the books. Work has also recently expanded to other high-end prestigious marques. The company is a member of the Good Garage Scheme and Automotive Technician Accredited (ATA), which means that work can be carried out without invalidating warranties.

The two business partners view further expansion as inevitable due to the demand for their services. Helping Beverley Motor Works realise these ambitions is Paragon Data Services' Iain Bland, a member of For Entrepreneurs Only.

Iain Bland said: “As a young business it's easy to go from one idea to the next so my role is to encourage focus, look at costing models, make sure their growth plan is realistic and hopefully inspire. In Hull and East Yorkshire there is a growing business-to-business support network that recognises that the main reason to invest here is the people.”
