Winter Driving Tips
10th September 2021
Whether you're an experienced driver on the roads this coming winter or a new driver experiencing these difficult conditions for the first time, here are some top tips to prepare you for safe driving in the snow and icy conditions.
Distance and time
It is vital to remember how greatly your stopping distance in snow and ice increases from its normal amount, which means if you drive too close to the vehicle in front and need to brake quickly, you won't be able to stop in time. Visibility can become an issue too, so ensure to keep plenty of distance and give yourself extra time on journeys to avoid unnecessary stressing and rushing.
Before setting off on a journey, check all your lights are working correctly as the long dark nights will increase their use. You should also be checking your tyres and ensure they are in good condition as their grip is reduced in the winter.
Anyone who's ever broken down in winter will agree that the wait for a tow truck feels like forever, so ensure you have some essentials in your vehicle in case you do break down. You'll thank yourself later for packing the likes of a blanket, a big bottle of water, emergency snacks, a first aid kit and even a book.
