What to expect at your MOT
14th October 2019
An essential part of regular motor maintenance is getting an annual MOT to ensure your car stays in safe, working order. You can’t legally drive your vehicle without having a valid MOT certificate, so it’s a good idea to know when it is and what happens.
Check with the DVLA
The DVLA has a handy tool to find out when your MOT is due, and it’s free to use. Check it out here if life's got on top of you and you can’t remember when yours is. You simply need to enter your registration number and you’ll be able to view details about your vehicle such as when its tax and MOT run out.
Having an MOT test without your car needing any repairs doesn’t actually take that long, usually between 45 minutes to an hour so some car owners prefer to wait while the inspection is being carried out. If your vehicle fails its MOT and repairs are required however, the length of time your car is at the garage will be longer.
The testing process involves inspection of electrical equipment such as headlights and indicators, steering, suspension, tyres, exhausts, brakes, mirrors, windscreen and windscreen wipers, seat belts and seats.
How to prepare
You’d be surprised at how many vehicles fail their MOT for a lot of minor issues that could easily have been prepared for, so we recommend creating a checklist to make sure nothing is forgotten in the build up to the big day. Don’t forget to check that your registration plates are easy to read, the general interior and exterior of your vehicle is clean and decluttered, the horn is loud enough, you have fixed any dashboard warning lights beforehand and you have topped up the windscreen wash.
