When winter arrives with dark nights and a drop in temperature, the weather can be pretty unpredictable and the risk of breakdowns and incidents on the roads increases. Here are 5 tips on how to prepare your car for the winter months.

Get your car serviced

Check if your car is due a service during the winter months, and make the most of the free seasonal vehicle checks offered at Beverley Motor Works. Lots of problems with cars are enhanced by cold weather, but about half the problems reported can be avoided by general servicing, regular checks and good maintenance, so there’s no catch - just to ensure that your vehicle won’t let you down when the temperature drops.

Check your car battery

Car batteries don’t last forever, averaging a lifespan of around 4 - 5 years, so if your car is having more trouble than usual in starting, the battery may need replacing.

Check your tyres

Essential for both steering and braking, you must ensure your tyres are in good condition to be driven on potentially wet and icy roads. Tyres need to be checked for tread depth and pressure to ensure they are safe to drive on, and can even be swapped to winter tyres for better grip and road ability, but our engineers can check that when you book in for a free seasonal vehicle check.

Check for any sign of cracks in your windscreen

Cracks in your windscreen can grow bigger with help from the cold temperatures, so these need touching up so they don’t turn into bigger problems. In the same area, the windscreen wipers should also be checked for wear and tear, with the screen washer fluid topped up with antifreeze.

Prepare for accidents and long journeys

Have an emergency winter breakdown kit stored in your boot with items including a torch, scraper, de-icer, blanket, hi-viz vest, shovel and snacks in case you need to get to safety.

To ensure your car is well and truly prepared for driving in the freezing temperatures this winter, why not book in for a FREE seasonal vehicle check with Beverley Motor Works. Give us a call on 01482 429350, or email us at sayhello@beverleymotorworks.co.uk for more information.
